A short hop by air separates them, and almost nothing else lines up. Trinidad is the big forested one with the capital, the swamp and the waterfalls. Tobago is the small one built around reef water and slow beach days. Choose the island first; the day sorts itself out after that.

Some days belong to neither island on its own. Waterfalls run down both, the forest is protected on both, and the wildlife is the reason plenty of people come at all.
Trinidad is a working island with a rainforest behind it.
The capital keeps its own hours, the Northern Range starts twenty minutes north of it, and the best day here is usually a drive: the city in the morning, a beach or a swamp by late afternoon.
Tobago sells the water better than anywhere.
Buccoo Reef sits in shallow, clear water a few minutes offshore, and the Nylon Pool is a sandbar in the middle of the sea that you can stand up in. Almost every good Tobago day starts at a jetty.

The Scarlet Ibis Roost
The Caroni Swamp is mangrove and brown water for most of the afternoon, and then the light goes and the national bird flies in to roost by the thousand. The birds land in one tree after another until the green turns solid red. Boats leave mid-afternoon and sit still on the water for the last half hour; the whole thing is over in the fifteen minutes before dark.

The Nylon Pool
A mile off Buccoo, the sea shallows onto a bright sandbar where the water comes up to your chest and the bottom is white sand. Boats moor and everyone simply gets out and stands in the middle of the ocean. Most trips reach it by glass-bottom boat over Buccoo Reef, so you get the coral on the way and the sandbar as the reward.

Bake and Shark at Maracas
The road over the Northern Range to Maracas is a switchback with one famous view stop, and at the bottom is a wide brown-sand bay lined with sheds selling fried shark in fried bread. You dress it yourself from a row of sauces. Trinidadians drive an hour for lunch here; the swim is almost secondary.
